The Department of Material Science and Engineering (Department of Materials) was established on the basis of the former High Polymer Teaching and Research Section. This specialty contains 12 teachers, including 1 doctoral tutor and 8 master tutors; 1 teacher is crowned as young college key teacher in Henan Province and 2 teachers as academic and technological leaders in Henan Provincial Department of Education; 4 professors and 9 associate professors.

Over the past five years, the department has undertaken 19 provincial and ministerial level research projects including the National Natural Science Foundation, applied for 5 patents, and published more than 180 academic papers in well-known academic journals at home and abroad, of which more than 60 were collected by SCI and EI. it has obtained more than 30 various government awards, and trained more than 50 graduates; school-enterprise cooperation is in the forefront of the school, for example, it cooperates with Henan Coal Chemical Industry Group, Beijing Dehaibei Technology and Development Co., Ltd., Xuzhou Zhengling Coating Co., Ltd. Henan Xindaxin Materials Co., Ltd. and other famous enterprises and all of these have achieved good economic and social benefits.
